Tetravalanche is a frantic platformer that combines Tetris and Avalanche, as the name would suggest. You play a little man struggling to escape a fierce purple monster that’s constantly nipping at your heals. To put some space between you and the beast you have to jump on falling Tetris blocks that stack on each other to make a tower for you to climb and see just how high you can get. The blocks will turn grey after they settle into place, and then you punch them or jump up through them and bust them with your head, which keeps you from getting locked in by all the falling bricks. But if the bricks hit you while they’re still falling, you get knocked down a few levels, pushing you closer to the terrible monster. There are a couple power ups to help you out, like a shield that protects you and a triple jump bonus that adds extra pep to your jump move. There is a also a devious brick that is a single metal block with an arrow pointing down, this will slam you way down if it hits you; and it also breaks down the first few blocks that it hits. When the pace picks up and you get higher and higher, these will become your greatest adversaries.
The game play is smooth and fast, and as the speed and brick amounts pick up it gets really tough so there’s a good challenge to the game. I just wonder why, when the bricks fill in a full line they don’t disappear. I thought that would add to the challenge, or at least be a fun extra mode. Other than that the game is one of those platformers that is simple, but the more you play it the more depth you find. It forces you to think ahead and often rely on quick decisions.
I give Tetravalanche 4.5 stars out of 5.
