A futuristic battle has taken place and your allies have been betrayed-you’re captain Rick Taylor, commander of the United Coalition Army of Earth leading a daring liberation mission to rescue Kilodes and stick it to the galactic man. Piloting your squidship you have 5 upgrades to your main gun and 3 secondary weapons with their own upgrades your shootspace robots, enemy drones and a handful of bosses to accomplish your mission. At the end of every mission you get to spend your hard won cash on the previously mentioned upgrades and head out to the next battle.
In between every mission is a hand drawn comic of the story-to be perfectly honest about it-I wasn’t that impressed with the comic or the story-but I like the idea of it. The gameplay was fairly smooth, no glitches or severe problems. Music was somewhat enjoyable. Graphics were moderately acceptable. My biggest hang up was the story more than anything-it just wasn’t compelling enough-I found myself clicking on the skip cutscene button more often than not. One other small problem is the increasing difficulty varied from level to level-some levels seemed too easy, while others seemed to difficult in the first or second pass. I would expect a top down scroller like this to have a predictably linear development. the varying difficulties didn’t hamper the overall gameplay-but it was noticeable throughout the game.
Your weapons: the machine gun, the plasma gun, mortar, and flare gun (homing missile). I preferred the flare gun and the MG on most levels with the mortar as a close second in terms of overall destructive power. In the levels enemies will drop powerups: shields, rapid fire, firepower increase, full health, and nuke. You can’t count on these to help you for long or to know when they’ll pop up for you-your best bet is to upgrade you armor and MG and slug it out.
