Simple is beautiful? I think so, and Space Defenders is a pretty decent example. Do you remember the good old 80's arcade game- Space Invaders? The goal was stopping a "deadly" invasion, and shooting all the intruders before they land on earth.
On Space Defenders we gladly take the role of the opposing force, this time we attack earth ( or some other planet) and try causing as much damage we can.
The game play is one of the simplest I encountered, you move your flying troops by using the arrows keys, trying to avoid bullets and missiles shot at your direction.
To make things even more simple, the shooting is fully automated and all you have to do is hover above your target and wait.
But her lies the main problem of the game, it has nice potential but gets too repetitive quite fast.
Even though its simplicity i did like the game, especially the game is the game dialogs between levels, those texts made me smile and think about death and war in a smart and cynical way. The moral my friends, is that war does not have right or wrong, we all lose.
Back to the game, each level adds another element your enemies will use, from regular bullets, through guided missiles, tanks and it's just getting harder.
Somewhere around the sixth level i felt the game's difficulty increasing, as i noticed the sky was filled with bullets, missiles and overall mayhem.
All in all, Space Defenders is a plain space invaders-style game, with an interesting twist. Few upgrades like extra weapons, anti missiles and nuclear bombs perhaps for the invaders could really add to the overall fun and increase the fun.
