Soul Redeemer is pitched as an action game with RPG elements, which is fairly accurate. You, the Soul Redeemer are charged with single-handedly fighting back the torrents of underworld minions that are pouring forth as a result of the constellation Orion's Swords alignment. As you fight through 6 levels and a tutorial, you have the opportunity to earn achievements which will ultimately give you armor, weapons, and special abilities in your fight with the evil before you.
Watching the opening scenes of the game is very confusing, the developers take cues from Asian character design, Greek mythology, and Christianity. While not in themselves problematic it creates a disjointed setup for the story line-as a side note, the voice acting was terrible. I would recommend hiring an actor or at least masking your voice. Once you get into game however, you can quickly dismiss the intro and back story and focus on well made graphics, smooth game play, and a genuinely enjoyable gaming experience. The monsters come in waves and you scamper about the field of play blasting at them with an array of weapons like the crossbow, ankh ray gun, and a flamethrower. Enemies become more challenging as you progress through the level as do the bosses of each level. Aside from my initial confusion, the main negative about the game is the music, repetitive and annoying-but in its defense, it is appropriate for the genre and one can always mute it.
Tip of the game, remember on the blood skeletons, you must blast them apart with your bombs(the 'e' key) or you will keep fighting the same baddies over and over until they wear your health to nothing-even with the shield in place.
