Shadow Rising is an interesting take on the side-scrolling beat um up.  You control your character with the mouse. fThey follow it around and you click to attack, pretty simple and when it works it’s pretty fun.  But there are still a few control issues that need ironing out.  I often found that the character would stop following my mouse, and I had to quit out to get it work again.  That’s pretty obnoxious when you consider the fact you can ONLY save your game if you make a Mochi account.  It was really frustrating to have to start over, and over and over because I didn’t feel like signing up your yet another website.  It also bombards you things to buy, I’m not usually one to complain about that kind of thing, but this game really lays it on thick.  You can buy new powers, and even health in the middle of the game.  It’s already fairly easy, so the powers are really just a novelty, but it feels really lame to be constantly advertised to.  It’s one thing to have a few bonuses you can buy, especially in a fun game that you’ll keep coming back to.  But with its simplicity and spotty control scheme the fact that this game keeps asking you to pay for things makes its flaws stand out even more.  If you’re really starved for a new side scroller, you might want to give it a whirl, and if you’ve got extra Mochi points lying around you might try spending here.  It’s just not a complete game, even if you fork over the points to buy new things, it still feels unfinished.  It’s a shame because the art and game play seem promising, hopefully the game can be patched to be more effective, and maybe some of the advertising will be pulled.
Until then I give Shadow Rising a low score of 2 stars out of 5.
