Saturday Night Blood fest is a smash TV style top down shooter, where you blast your way through waves of enemies to earn cash and prizes. The amount of blood you spill determines how you level up, and you can upgrade your weapons or buy new ones with your experience. You can also trade experience points in for cash when you get comfortable with the gun you have, or you can use it upgrade your health. The premise and game play are almost identical to the classic game Smash TV, but there is no multiplayer and you upgrade your character instead of picking up power ups. This system adds replay value and some welcome variety to the game. You can upgrade your pistol to a double pistol and then up to magnums or you can switch to a machine gun, assault rifle, shotgun or laser pistol, each with their own line of upgrades. The fact you have health instead of lives makes this game a bit easier than its predecessor, but once you die you have to start over, which is actually a nice “arcade” touch. Instead of being able to just grind the first couple levels you upgrade as your enemies get harder, and this makes the game play feel very satisfying.
The one thing that’s missing is a multiplayer aspect, this game lends itself perfectly to a co-op setup, and with the different upgrade paths it would be fun to get a laser rifle and auto shotgun going at the same time. Besides that the game play is smooth, fun and brutal. It’s a great time waster that adds some depth to an old formula, and will have past Smash TV addicts back to their old tricks. I had a ton of fun with this game, and with a mouse and keyboard the controls are solid.
I give Saturday Night Bloodfest 4.5 out of 5 Bgames stars
