Runes and Magic is an atypical tower defense game to say the least. Yes, you have to protect your castle. Yes, you must place towers on a winding map. Yes, you can upgrade those towers and use area effects spells or abilities. What made this game slightly different are the skill system utilizing status effects on single towers only. If you only have 2 shock attacks available then only 2 towers can use shock attacks. Every map gave a specific limit of effects to use creating a unique challenge in defeating the waves of attackers. I found that the game was very tough to beat and most levels required more than one attempt to complete it, especially to move up in the game. The biggest flaw in the game is the pace at which one advances levels and acquires skill points-required to upgrades your attacks. Also, the overall feel of Runes and Magic was slightly off center a bit-I can’t quite put my finger on the problem, I enjoyed the game and spent much more than the usual half hour to play it, but I couldn’t escape the fact that one nagging feeling about it.

 Art/Graphics: 0/1

For the complexity of the game there should have been more detail put into the art and design.

 Sound/Music: 0/1

Uggh, it was annoying, and while appropriate for the theme and genre-it just gave me a headache.

 Story/Plot: 1/1

A well thought out story line gave the game much depth to drag it slightly above most TD games out there.

 Interface/Control: 1/1

The game wasn’t hard to play and after the initial learning curve, the game’s interface was easy to navigate.

 Enjoyability/Replayability: 1/1

I can’t put my finger on why, but I like this game and have continued to play it off and on over several days. The game has a high difficulty level making it hard to beat the game outright.

All in all a unique TD experience and while I wouldn’t call Runes and Magic a great game, it was well worth the time end effort to check it out. 3/5 Bgames stars.
