Poltergifts is a neat defense game, where you have to defend your home from waves of marauding, evil Christmas toys. What makes this game so fun is the style of the baddies, there’s demented dolls; vomiting glowing eyed babies and twisted Jack in the Boxes. They all look really gross, and creepy, which almost makes this a combination of a Christmas game and a Halloween game. You punch the attacking toys, or you can pick up power ups to help you take down the fiends more effectively. There’s a slingshot, Frisbee and a few other guns, as well as some traps like block walls and marbles to keep the baddies at bay while you pummel their cohorts. The weapons you pick up, and your main weapon, the fist can all be upgraded between levels. You can’t buy ammo for the weapons; you just get them as presents, so it’s tough to decide which ones you want to upgrade. I suggest beefing up the fist as fast as you can, because it’s your mainstay, and who doesn’t like to pound a vomiting possessed baby in the face with power and authority?
This game is an awesome holiday game, because it trades holiday cheer for holiday fear. Instead of a light hearted, Santa game, Poltergifts turns the season its head and grosses you out with a nasty, frantic defense game. The power up system is fun, and getting the power ups randomly; not being able to decide which ones you get makes it important to be balanced with your upgrades. After you get your fist to a good level you have spread the love and make sure that you have as many juiced up power ups as possible, because you never know what you might get.
