Notebook Wars is a neat top down shooter with an interesting twist to the graphics. The graphics has been created entirely on notebook paper, which gives the game a really neat, cartoony feel to it. You blast your way through 15 levels of stylized baddies that come in plenty of different varieties along with 4 final boss planes. It’s not as fast and frantic as many old school top down shooters were, like the ones I remember from the arcades, but it still offers a good challenge, and plenty of great weapons and upgrades for those weapons. There’s a good variety to the guns, and the fact you can upgrade each one’s damage and firing speed make it fun to customize your ship. Adding to the customization you can buy extra slots to make use of more than one weapon per level. It’s a shame there’s only one type of bomb, but it’s hard to get upset over that when there’s so much else to worry about upgrading and customizing.
The game play is smooth, so the speed isn’t too much of a downer, and there are tons of enemy planes and bullets to avoid, so if it were any faster it would end up being too hard. You control the plane with your mouse, and there’s a handy auto fire option (but be careful because you do get graded on accuracy.) The levels get harder and harder, so it’s important to upgrade your ship in a useful fashion, and not blow all your hard earned cash on powering up one weapon without buying a new one that can deal much more damage, or saving up for a new slot. All in all this is a neat spin on a classic style of game, and while there are improvements to be made the flaws don’t ruin the fun or the quirky style for the entire game.
I give Notebook Wars 4.5 Bgames stars out of 5.
