The second in a popular series, Notebook Wars 2 has no silly back-story, no hidden agenda; it’s a plain and simple top-down scrolling shooter. You pick you ship and weapons, upgrading as you see fit and you blast enemies to smithereens. Each level becomes more difficult and longer, the music cycles in an unending loop of Star Wars/ E.T. style epic soundtrack and the whole thing looks like a 6th grader got bored in class and drew it all with crayons. Now, don’t take that last bit as a knock on the game, I love hand drawn looking graphics, it adds quite a bit of flavor to the game.
Pros: The art is great fun, worth the price of admission in itself. The game interface and mechanics are fairly smooth, game play is fair and balanced, no impossible baddies or bosses-if you have the right ship and or weapon that is.
Cons: As always, I have a gripe about the music, while funny at first the third time the track loops it becomes mind-numbingly obnoxious. The developers, however, have graciously included volume controls and a mute option to handle that issue. The upgrade costs seem a little outrageous, but when you factor in that you can replay any previously played level to earn more cash, it’s not all that significant a con. The biggest flaw in my opinion is the lack of a story and levels to keep the game going. Once you’ve beaten the game, even if it’s with a substandard ship/weapon lay out, there’s no real point in continuing to play-it’s too boring to keep refinishing the same levels over and over.
All in all Notebook Wars 2 is a decent play-if for nothing else than to admire the novelty of the artwork.
3.5/5 Bgames stars
