Not your War is a top-down scrolling shooter that is a little like R-Type, with a better fire control system. The opening story is the game’s only negative element, not so much the story but that pace at which the story reveals. For instance, I had time to go to the john and make a sandwich and still have time to catch all the main points of the story. Other than the pacing I liked the story itself, you’ve been expelled from the imperial navy and banished from the war on Rhea. Of course, you answer to a higher power and won’t listen to the imperial dogma, you fight for Rhea’s innocence with your little one-seater. As you plow through 10 days of battle you’re given a choice of 5 upgrades to help you conquer the seemingly endless waves of drones and missile frigates. The best upgrade is easily the missile launcher-a slow recharge is its only weakness. The worst upgrade would be the bullet-time missile defense-it’s cumbersome and doesn’t seem to really help all that much. I also like the heavy cannon for one shot kills on all the drones, and the speed with which it can dispatch destroyers and missile frigates. The penetrating ammo is best on missile barrages, but otherwise not that impressive. Lastly, the second best upgrade is the anti-missile turret. Very effective, not very accurate but if a stray drone gets between you and your target it’ll pop the same damage as your normal cannons.
The normal features like music and graphics aren’t all that special, but I found them to be good for mood setting adding a bit of ambience to the game that most seem to overlook. Controls are simple enough. I like the frenetic pacing of the game play itself in a stark contrast to the story pacing.
Day 7 was my Achilles’ heel. I have to confess that on the normal difficulty setting I had to replay it at least 10 times. I would weaken or destroy the General and the drones would just overtake me. I appreciated the ability to switch to an easier setting.
Not Your War is All in all a great play-I would play it through at least twice. 4/5 Bgames stars
