Man in the Gap is as addictive as it is simple. You play as a man, running around onscreen as the top and bottom of the screen systematically squeeze together in an attempt to crush you. The goal is to find the areas that will not connect and make your man into a little black line. You have to identify and then high tail it to these areas, because the crushing speeds get faster and faster the more safeties you earn. The challenge is to see how many crushing waves you can survive, there’s no guns, no wall jumping, no upgrades, just you and the screen. This isn’t really a bad thing, the game is so faced paced you never feel it getting tedious. It’s frantic, quick and that’s great because it runs smoothly and the controls are effective and simple. Some games need a lot of bells and whistles to keep you playing, but this is not one of them. As time progresses the screen shapes change and things pick in pace, and that’s just perfect. There’s really no point to having upgrades or new levels, because the game works just fine as is. Deep complex games with a ton going on are fun, but games like this have their own place. You pick this game up for one round or ten and then come back to it later and it still has that fun, frantic feeling. Because of it’s simplicity it’s easy to pick up and play, but good luck trying to master it. The game is really tricky, and the game play style forces you to think on your feet and make decisions quickly. Since you have so little time to move you have to be very decisive, you can’t get to one spot and then change you mind. Man in Gap reminds us that simple best, and I give it 4.5 stars out 5
