Island Survival is at its core a simple puzzle game, you stay out of the water until the required amount of time has passed. You run and jump using the arrow keys and whenever possible, pick up a falling snowflake? Star? Tribble? I’m not sure exactly what falls from the sky, but when you touch one it adds a single layer to your island’s base to give just another seconds worth of time to help you reach your goal.
The graphics are very 8-bit, coloring is almost Atari-esque. Controls couldn’t be any more simple: left and right arrows, and up to jump. No music and 12 levels to work through.
Pros: Every level has a time limit to last-the longest being 60 seconds-that means island Survival is a relatively fast paced game. I both liked and disliked the count at the end of a failed level stating “only 4 more seconds.” The lack of music is also a pro and a con, no cycling track to annoy, but there were no noises to add a ‘feel’ to the game.
Cons: The overall concept was dry, the lack of any story, challenge or ambiance left me bored after the second level. The best thing the game has going for itself is that it is short.
I found 3 levels fairly difficult and couldn't pass on the first 3 attempts: 9, 10 and 11. 11 went so fast that it seemed impossible to stand on the island long enough-I saw several, you only needed 1 more second. The falling helpers are so random that you have to rely on random luck to beat these three levels.
All in all a bland experience-worth one pass, but don’t get invested.
2.5/5 Bgames stars
