Ghost Hacker is a new tower defense game that will feel very standard for those familiar with the genre. It’s got solid game play, everything is smooth and it seems fairly well balanced, and heck, it barely brings something new to the table. When you build your towers they each have their own abilities, one does splash damage, one tower charges up its shots if it has the time, and one will do poison and so on. Instead of just leveling them up and increasing their attributes that way, you earn special upgrades that can be attached to the towers. Some can hold more than others, and each one has different colored slots that correspond with certain upgrades. It’s an interesting touch, because it makes you think about what upgrades will work best together, and forces you to stay on your toes. You can’t just jack up your towers wily nilly and have a huge group of totally killer towers; you have to actually think about where each upgrade is going and how that will help you win. It doesn’t spin the world of tower defense on its head, but it is nice to see a little innovation in such a crowded market.
The “Tron” style of this game and the unique upgrade system help it stand out in the tower defense market, and it’s defiantly worth a try, even for seasoned TD veterans. There’s a real challenge to the game thanks to the limit on upgrades, even you amass a great fortune of “memory” it won’t help you if you can’t use it correctly. That, and the glowing style will keep you entertained for at least a few levels if you’re a Tron fan. There’s a nice amount of links and exploring what each one does and how they combine is really the best part of the game.
I give Ghost Hacker 4 stars out of 5.
