Flash RTS games are a unique genre to tackle as a reviewer. One ought to be fair and objective, but every game has to be compared to other games in its class that are out. If I use that criteria; Darkbase Alien RTS is a horrible, horrible game when you compare it to games like Command and Conquer or Starcraft, but they don’t use Flash and have more tools to work with to make the game aesthetically appealing. The Story in and of itself is the usual RTS fare, nothing revolutionary here. Group A’s struggle to conquer group B so that Group A can continue in the galaxy uninhibited. So, I would have to rely on the game play and interface to gauge my review. The controls are somewhat better than most Flash RTS, less complicated and easier to remember. Building and gathering elements of the game are no less difficult to navigate, essentially a point and click is all that’s required. There is a nice comprehensive tutorial to help you along the learning curve. Sound is okay, you can definitely identify elements from games like Starcraft. Graphics are uninspired, but passable-my only gripe here is the lack of any animation to show that every soldier is fighting, the hunters all look like they’ve stopped for a drink at the trough every time they rush the enemy.

I can pinpoint one topic that is crucial for any Real Time Strategy game where DA is lacking and that is the game’s AI. I was able to walk through the first 5 levels in under 3 minutes each with one quick swarm maneuver-build up as many soldiers as you can-send out one scout and keep the bulk of your forces at home to defend while your scout locates the enemy base. Once found, send the whole army at it, not stopping to pick off skirmishers. As soon as you destroy the enemy base, you have won the level. Rinse and Repeat. It should be a little more difficult than that-shouldn't it?
All in all a mediocre play-try it for the ego boost as you stroll through the levels with the above strategy.
