What a strange game. Closed in Addendum is a prequel of sorts-according to the developer. I can’t give you an explanation without ruining the game so how do I review CiA without tainting the gaming experience? I could talk about how it made me feel. Most games don’t evoke much of an emotional response from me other than like or dislike. I felt bewildered by it. I played it through two times to get both endings and I was puzzled by the label of what conventional wisdom would call the sensible action.
I could talk about the aesthetics like the background art being surprisingly appropriate for invoking a feeling of mystery. Or the dull background music increasing the sense of suspense as you wander through Andy’s little world. It’s clear the audio and visual effects were supposed to instill a sense of melancholy.
There were things I never obtained a grasp for like why did I pick up a syringe? Or what were the 3 legged things running around? The game offered more in the way of exploration and less about resolution of any issue. I can’t even say I can clearly define the plot or story line. This game is just weird but I like it.
I hope there will be more installments for this game-I would really enjoy seeing where the story goes. However, I can see a difficulty with that as well. Games like this are good because they leave you wanting more. If he expands the story too much it becomes too easy to knit pick about the shortcomings and we all know no game is truly perfect.
Games I would compare this to would be: Coma, Gateway II and Loved. They’re not exact matches but you get a similar melancholic feeling when you play them along with either a strange story or no story and a game locked in a surreal fantasy. Either way you look at it you got your time’s worth by playing them.
All in all a good game well worth the effort and noodle scratching: 4/5.
