Bio Assault is a top-down scrolling shooter. You’re tasked with destroying everything in sight as you earn bytes to purchase upgrades. Essentially, you’re a hacker sent to Destrocom’s mainframe to. . .well, hack the cpu. The lame story put aside, this game’s actually fun to play. 12 missions and 6 bosses give you plenty of baddies to wade through. Each level becomes gradually more difficult than the previous level. The bosses remain relatively static in difficulty, meaning if you can manage to beat the first boss in the game you have all the strategy you need to blast the rest. This is one of the few games where purchasing additional weapons and upgrades help your overall performance, with the exception of the acceleration upgrade-I saw no benefit to it at all. Best upgrades were the minions and the mini missiles, any option that is automatic and helps you progress in the level is top notch in my book. Graphics reminded me of the old Tempest game, but cleaner. It made for a more enjoyable visual experience as there were no distracting background elements to draw your focus away from the game. Music was a midi blend of boredom, I keep expecting a cut scene to Beverly Hills Cop. (Look it up-Eddie Murphy and Judge Reinhold funny plot, terrible music). A quick note about the awards system to the developers-an award should be slightly more involved than just advancing from level to level. The ending was somewhat anti-climactic leaving the story unresolved.
In the end the game was more positive than negative-I enjoyed myself and felt a small sense of accomplishment when it was all done.
All in all a decent play-worth the 30 mins or so to complete-Bio Assault gets 3.5/5 Bgames stars
