When I saw Amusix:Flute I thought to myself, 'cool, a musical game that I might learn a thing or two from', as it suggested. It sure did make it more interesting than boring piano lessons I took as a child, but I was actually really surprised to see a fun music/rhythmic game that actually comes near to imitate real playing.
The interface is your keyboard, but instead of piano keys, or flute's, or whatever, you use your keyboard letters and this is how you produce those cute melodies. It seemed that the game doesn't really appreciate it more when I play all the right notes and keep the precise time to each, rather than to when I fail miserably. On 'Jingle Bells' I played so bad and missed a note (ok, 4... or 7. Basically I pressed all wrong keys but the correct one) and I was still able to move on to the next level-song. So, unlike my piano lessons with Mrs. as old as Beethoven, when I made mistakes I didn't get my fingers hit with a stick, which is super cool.
As a music game, sound is obviously important, and I guess the sound quality is fine. Although, as it says in the title it's a flute and you also see a flute picture and it's all good, though I'd expect to have heard a flute sound, or something that resembles it at least... The melodies are cute, fun, and unless you're totally out of this world, you'd recognize all of them. You have an option to hear the song before you play it yourself and see the notes so you can prepare the position of your fingers on the keys. Just like a real instrument, if you accidentally press the wrong key, it will make that key's note, so just like a beginner, don't expect your music to sound exactly like the example you just heard. Speaking of keys and notes, what made it challenging, and something I totally didn't expect from a game, are sharp notes. When you stumbled around them, you will have to also hold the shift key with the letter, to make a sharp note.
Bottom line, in some ways it's just like other music games, fun, down to the beat and easy. I wouldn't have recommend it to someone who's really into a challenge, but if you're looking for something fun to pass time with then that's definitely your game. My rating 3/5.
